Managing AI Visibility Prompts
Add, suggest, pause, and remove the prompts RankNest asks AI assistants each week, and choose which engines check each one.
Prompts are the questions RankNest puts to AI assistants on the client's behalf. Good prompts sound like a real customer asking for a recommendation: "Who is the best emergency plumber in Tampa?" works better than "plumber Tampa". This page covers adding, suggesting, pausing, and removing them.
For what AI Visibility does overall, see AI Visibility Overview.
Where to find it
Open the client's AI Visibility page and scroll to the Prompts section. Its header shows how many active prompts the client is using out of its allowance, and notes that prompts are checked weekly with no reports used.
Add prompts
- In the Prompts section, click Add prompts. The form opens.
- Type your questions into Questions people ask an assistant, one per line. Blank lines and repeated lines are ignored.
- Optionally, pick suggestions (see the next section). Picked suggestions are added along with anything you typed.
- Under Engines, tick the engines that should check these prompts. The form starts with ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews ticked. Tick Claude to check it too.
- Choose a Country. Answers are requested for that country.
- Click Track N prompts, where N is the number being added.
A message confirms how many prompts were added and how many were already tracked. When these are the client's first prompts, the first check runs within about 30 minutes.
The engines and country you pick apply to every prompt in that batch. To check different prompts on different engines, add them in separate batches.
Get suggestions from the client's data
Under Suggestions from your data, click Suggest prompts. RankNest turns terms the client already has into questions an assistant would be asked. Suggestions are free and use no reports.
Each suggestion shows the question, the term it came from, and a label for its source:
- Search Console: the client's real search queries, with impressions shown. This is the richest source, so connect Google Search Console first if you can.
- Tracked keyword: keywords in Rank Tracking.
- Saved keyword: keywords saved in Keyword Research.
- SEO test: the primary keyword of the client's SEO tests.
- Service: the Services Offered on the Client Profile, split at commas and new lines.
- Reviews: recurring themes from Message Mining analysis.
Brand searches and single-word terms are left out, and so is anything already tracked as a prompt. Tick the suggestions you want, then click Track N prompts. Click Refresh to load the list again.
Tip: Suggestions are a starting point. Edit the wording in the text box if a question reads awkwardly. A prompt that sounds like a real person gets an answer closer to what a real person would see.
Pause and resume a prompt
Each prompt in the list has a checkbox on the left. Untick it to pause the prompt, and tick it again to resume. A paused prompt shows Paused under its text.
- Paused prompts are not checked and don't count toward the client's active prompt limit.
- A paused prompt's past answers still show in the Latest answers grid, dimmed, and in the weekly trend.
- You can't resume a prompt while the client is using all of its active prompts. Pause another prompt first.
Change a prompt
There is no edit button for a prompt's wording, engines, or country. To change any of these, add the new version, then remove the old one.
Remove a prompt
- Click Remove at the right end of the prompt's row.
- In Remove this prompt?, click Remove.
The prompt stops being checked. Its past answers stay in the trend.
Prompt limits
Each plan includes a set number of active prompts per client (see Pricing). When the client is using all of them, Add prompts is unavailable and a notice links to options for raising the limit. If you try to add more prompts than the client has left, the form tells you how many are over. Pause existing prompts or add a prompt pack. See Limits & Add-ons.
Check schedule
The Weekly and Manual toggle in the page header sets whether the client's prompts are checked automatically. Weekly is the default, and the header shows when the next check is due. Manual stops the weekly checks, so answers only update when you click Run now.
Tips
- Write prompts the way customers ask: include the service and the location, and ask for a recommendation or a comparison.
- Keep a mix. A few broad prompts ("best roofers in Denver") show general visibility, while specific ones ("who repairs hail damage on metal roofs") show where the client can win.
- Add competitors in Competitors before the first check, so the first results already include share of voice.
Troubleshooting
Add prompts is greyed out. The client is using all of its active prompts. Pause or remove one, or raise the limit.
The suggestions list says "Nothing to suggest yet". The client has no data to build from and Search Console isn't connected. Click Connect Search Console, or add saved keywords, tracked keywords, or services first.
The last weekly check was skipped. A warning at the top of the page says why, for example when the client has more active prompts than its allowance. Pause some prompts or add a prompt pack, and the next weekly check runs as normal.
