Rank Tracking Overview
Track where a client ranks in Google for the keywords that matter, by device and location, and see how each position moves over time.
Rank Tracking checks Google for the keywords you choose and records where the client's site shows up. For every keyword you see the current position, the best position so far, the page that ranks, and a trend line of how it has moved. It answers a question clients ask all the time: "Where do we rank for this search?"
Search Console already reports an average position, but that number blends every location, device, and day together. A tracker checks one country or city, on the devices you pick, on a schedule you set. That makes it the right tool for watching specific money keywords, local searches, and the pages you are actively working on.
Where to find it
Open a client, then click Rank Tracking in the client sidebar. The first time you open it, the page shows Track where this site ranks on Google with a Create a tracker button. If you haven't added a client yet, start with Add Your First Client.
How it works
- Create a tracker. A tracker is one domain checked in one place: a country, or a city or region inside it. You also pick the devices, how deep into the results to look, and how often to check.
- Add keywords. Paste a list, or pick from the searches the site already gets impressions for in Search Console.
- Let the schedule run. RankNest checks Google daily or weekly, or only when you click Check now.
- Read the results. Summary cards sit above a keyword table with positions, changes, Search Console figures, and the ranking URL.
See Trackers & Keywords for setup and Reading Rankings for what each number means.
Trackers
A client can have more than one tracker. Use a second tracker when you need a different location, for example one for the whole country and one for the client's home city. When a client has several trackers, a dropdown at the top of the page switches between them, and RankNest remembers the one you last viewed.
The line under the tracker name summarizes its setup: domain, location, devices, depth (for example Top 20), schedule, and when it was last checked.
Limits
Each plan includes a number of tracked keywords per client. They are counted like this:
- One keyword checked on one device counts as one tracked keyword.
- A tracker set to Desktop and mobile counts each keyword twice.
- Checking deeper than the top 20 results counts each keyword again for every extra 20 results. The top 10 and top 20 count once, the top 30 counts twice, the top 50 three times, and the top 100 five times.
Scheduled checks are included with your tracked keywords and never use research reports. Check now runs an extra check on demand, which does use research reports, and it always tells you how many before it runs.
The page header shows how many tracked keywords the client is using next to your research reports for the month. For the numbers on each plan see Pricing, and for how counting and add-on packs work see Limits & Add-ons.
Tip: Start with mobile only and the top 20. That covers most local and service searches at the lowest count, and you can add desktop or go deeper later from the tracker's settings.
