Google Search Console

Connect Google Search Console to RankNest and assign a property to each client to power performance data across the platform.

Google Search Console (GSC) is the data source behind most of RankNest's performance numbers: clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position. You connect one Google account at the agency level, then assign a Search Console property to each client. Without a connected property, the affected widgets show a "Connect" empty state instead of data.

Where to find it

Click Account Settings in the dashboard sidebar (some in-app links call it Agency Settings), open the Integrations tab, and select the Google Search Console sub-tab.

You can also connect GSC while creating a client, since the Client Setup Wizard includes a Connect Google Search Console step. You can change a client's assigned property later from Client Settings.

How to connect your Google account

  1. On the Google Search Console sub-tab, click Connect Google Account.
  2. Sign in with the Google account that has access to your clients' Search Console properties, and grant the requested read-only Search Console access.
  3. After Google returns you to RankNest, the card shows a Connected badge and lists the Search Console properties available to that account.

Note: RankNest requests read-only access to Search Console. It never changes anything inside your Search Console account.

How to assign a property to a client

Once connected, an Assign GSC Properties to Clients card appears below the connection card, with one row per client.

  1. Find the client's row.
  2. Open the property dropdown and choose the property that matches the client's domain.
  3. Click Save. A checkmark with the assigned property URL appears under the client's name.

You can also set the property for a single client from that client's Settings → Integrations tab, on the Google Search Console card.

Property permission labels

Some properties in the dropdown carry a label describing your account's permission level on that property:

  • restricted: your Google account has limited permission on the property in Search Console. Performance data still syncs normally; nothing is broken.
  • unverified: your account is unverified on the property, so Search Console cannot return performance data for it. Syncs come back empty. Pick a property where the account is an owner or full user.

What GSC data powers

Once a property is assigned, GSC data flows into:

  • The KPI row on the client overview, which shows clicks, impressions, CTR, and position with trends and sparklines.
  • SEO test results, which compare performance before and after every experiment.
  • The Page Inventory, which has per-page traffic columns.
  • Issues, where keyword cannibalization detection compares the queries each page ranks for.
  • The Linking Plan, where search query data helps judge how related two pages are when generating recommendations.

Data syncs daily. The first sync after connecting can take up to 24 hours to fully populate the 30-day rolling metrics, so a sparse chart on day one is normal.

Refreshing and disconnecting

  • Refresh re-reads the property list from Google. Use it after you add or verify a new property in Search Console.
  • Disconnect removes the stored connection. Client property assignments are kept, but no new data syncs until you reconnect.

Tips

  • Assign the property type that matches how the site is actually served. A domain property covers every variation, while a URL-prefix property only covers URLs under that exact prefix.
  • Small differences between RankNest and the Search Console interface are normal; Google's own reporting has a delay of a day or two.

Troubleshooting

No properties appear after connecting. The connected Google account has no verified properties. Verify the site in Search Console (or get added to the property), then click Refresh.

KPIs still show "Connect Google Search Console". The client has no property assigned. Assign one in the Assign GSC Properties to Clients card or from the client's Settings page.

A property syncs no data. Check its label in the dropdown. An unverified property cannot return performance data. Use an account with owner or full-user access to that property.
